“Sorry, darlin’,” Uncle Judge says on the other end of the line. “I know you liked Marie.”

“How’s Mom?” I ask, shoving the heartbreak of loss down, at least until I get through this conversation.

“Honestly?”

“Honestly.”

“Man’s a fucking wreck. Even knowing it was coming wasn’t enough to cushion that blow. He’s gonna need time.”

I swallow back the tears. “Are his kids coming home to be with him? I don’t like the idea of him being alone.”

“He’s not alone. He has the club.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes. “You know what I mean. He needs his kids. Last I heard, Tommy was in San Antonio, and Tammy right in Austin, attending beauty school.”

“They’re already here, honey. Don’t you worry about Mom, we have him covered. Probably more than he’d like at this point.”

I can only imagine. Mom’s called Mom for a reason. Not only does he have a need to make sure everyone else in the club is in a good place, but it takes a lot for him to accept that he too may need help from time to time.

“When’s the funeral?”

“In two days. Marie had already set it all up without Mom even knowing. We have no idea how she paid for it all, but you know Marie, always one for the mystery. And she knew Mom would be wrecked. It was the one last thing she could do to take care of him.”

I press my lips into a thin, sad smile. “They loved each other.”

“They sure did,” he agrees. “Weirdest fucking love I’ve ever seen. But even at their worst, as a team, they were unbreakable.”

That just makes me even more sad, proving that no couple is unbreakable. Not really. Even one with a rock-solid foundation like Mom and Marie are susceptible to being destroyed in an instant.

An image of Karma flashes through my mind. It happens a lot throughout the day, every single day, but I’ve grown accustomed to turning it off. I can’t think about him. Not anymore.

“You coming home for it?”

I blink, my mind coming back to the present and to the phone in my hand. “For what?”

“The funeral. Are you going to come home?

“I don’t know.”

Judge sighs. “No pressure. I get you have… unfinished business here.”

That makes me feel like shit. Yeah, I do have unfinished business there, and not just with Karma. I hadn’t just left him all those weeks ago. I’d left without a word to Blair as well.

She hadn’t done anything to deserve me ghosting her like that besides have the audacity to get pregnant.

God, I’m an asshole.

“I’ll talk to my boss. Mom and Marie are more important than anything I may have left unfinished.”

He doesn’t reply to that, but his question hangs heavy in the air.

“I can’t avoid coming home forever. And besides, I miss my family.”

I miss everyone.

“Okay, sweetheart. Let me know when you know.”

“Will do. Love you, Uncle Judge.”

“Love you too, doll face.”

Disconnecting the call, I drop my head forward and close my eyes. For just a few moments, I allow my thoughts to drift to Marie, and to all the memories of her and her crazy.
